It’s a New Dawn

I absolutely love being Nigerian. As a people, we are go-getters and very positive-minded. It seems the harder things get, the more optimistic we become as a nation.

Lately, we’ve introduced a plethora of additional greetings to announce important events. In the past, it was only at Christmas, New Year, Easter, and birthdays. It felt normal, manageable and acceptable to most other cultures.

Today, the story has unfortunately changed. Every new month has a WhatsApp e-card notification. Initially, it was a simple generic message: Happy New Month. This was sent unfailingly at the beginning of the month, with a beautiful prayer attached.

Gradually, it metamorphosed into more personalised versions. Welcome to March, April Blessings, Hello May, Joyful June, August is Here, Wishes for September.

As we were beginning to appreciate the monthly greetings, Nigerians took it a notch higher; it became daily.

Monday Blessings, Happy Tuesday, Step into Wednesday.

We had every day covered!

Some e-cards simply said “Good Morning”. These were used to break the monotony of mentioning every day of the week.

I must quickly add that I don’t have the empirical evidence to support my claim that only Nigerians get this creative under pressure. If we have other brothers (and sisters ) out there, please identify yourselves.

Is life really better with the daily reminders of what day or month it is? I wonder!!
